Hong Kong, nature & density / 2012
Although the skyline of Hong Kong Bay is by far the most recognizable city-scape worldwide -a vertical wall of office-towers confined between the Ocean and its rocky peaks-, with striking proportions for people who are not familiar with Hong Kong SAR, almost 70% of the total territory is covered by natural or afforested areas.
In July 2012 I shot photos to explore the relationship between urbanized Hong Kong SAR and the green property of parks and natural areas. Views had been selected through a survey of main Hong Kong territory hiking trails: mountain peaks, scenery points, and occasional holes in the curtain wall of trees have been the privileged observatories of a region that challenges any presumption on natural-artificial divergence.

Benché nell’immaginario comune Hong Kong venga rappresentata dall’inconfondibile quinta urbana che si estende sui due chilometri della baia di Hong Kong -una parete verticale costretta fra l’acqua e i picchi rocciosi-, con proporzioni che sorprendono chi conosce esclusivamente la metropoli globale, gran parte del territorio della regione speciale (SAR) di Hong Kong, quasi il 70% del territorio complessivo è coperto da aree naturali o rinaturalizzate.
Durante l’estate del 2012 ho fotografato le aree urbanizzate della SAR di Hong Kong, e il loro rapporto con il verde circostante, dalle aree naturali: sono stati i picchi delle montagne, i balconi panoramici, e gli squarci delle foreste a fare da punti di osservazione su un territorio che sfida ogni preconcetto sul rapporto fra naturale ed artificiale.
