The place of destiny

The place of destiny / 2020 Is the cosmos mainly cause or chance? Is our life formed only by our choices or are there also invisible forces? “The Place of Destiny” is a photographic project about all of us. A real place, Milan, becomes the setting where the invisible forces that move and attract each of us materialise themselves. All photographs are hand-made cyanotypes plus ink-jet prints on Magnani cotton fine-art paper (dimensions: 35x25cm, 70x50cm). You can watch the project by visiting the exhibition: “THE PLACE OF DESTINY“ from 01 July 2022 to 31 December 2022 at Easy Point, Caldera Park, Via Caldera 21, 20153 Milan Opening hours: Monday and Tuesday 08:30-19:30; Wednesday and Thursday 08:30-18:30; Friday 09:00-18:00; […]

On foot in a metro area: Milan

On foot in a metro area: Milan / 2010 – ongoing ” On foot in a metro area: Milan” is part of a broader photographic project, “On foot in a metro area”, and collects five crossings I have made through Milan and its metropolitan area. I’ve always made them on foot, slowly, marking the rhythm of my photographs at a steady pace, building a photographic map of the visited places. I have performed these explorations together with Sebastiano Brandolini. The area of investigation is a large suburban area, very huge, of about six million people, which I think can be grasped only by the slow look of a walker. I tried to recount the essence of such places. Is there still a centre in Milan or are there more centres? Where are the places chosen by Milan and by its many neighborhoods? In which direction is evolving the Milan’s metropolitan area? Where is the metropolitan imagination carrying us for the next decades? Why is ‘walking’ a political act nowadays? These are some of the questions I have tried to answer with my images. A piedi nella metropoli: Milano / 2010 – ongoing Il “A piedi nella metropoli: Milano” fa parte […]

Mega City Model

Mega City Model / 2013 “The ideal Renaissance city, an idealized place and urban prototype, was an approximation of a perfect model completely fulfilled by the few buildings representing the Polis. Conversely, the idea of a Chinese city is represented by a model where thousands of buildings stretch along street grids, grouped together seamlessly. The city is so vast that a possible border, a line of demarcation between the inside and the outside, is not even contemplated and can never be represented or photographed in full. These macromodels constitute microcosms, the crystallized expression of a future decided elsewhere, and apparently as indisputable as they are inevitable. There are 1.3 billion people in China. A population that is slowly decreasing, as it is in the West, but unlike the West, today only half the population is urbanized. According to estimates, over the next 20 years, 90% will move to cities. Assumptions, estimates, predictions. Maybe. But if it is accurate, more than 30 million people each year, for the next 20 years, will migrate from the countryside, turning from peasants to factory workers, occupying new homes, working in new industrial plants, frequenting new places. Annual construction volumes will rise to 7 billion […]

Splendid China

Splendid China / 2013 China has experienced a rapid and sudden growth. In a few years the cities have grown dramatically, new urban settlements have been born, the territory has completely changed. The past-era architectures, if not destroyed, have often been surrounded by new buildings, which in most cases do not maintain any relationship with them; at best the new towers are mere observers of the past. Hong Kong, nature & density

Hong Kong, nature & density / 2012 Although the skyline of Hong Kong Bay is by far the most recognizable city-scape worldwide -a vertical wall of office-towers confined between the Ocean and its rocky peaks-, with striking proportions for people who are not familiar with Hong Kong SAR, almost 70% of the total territory is covered by natural or afforested areas. In July 2012 I shot photos to explore the relationship between urbanized Hong Kong SAR and the green property of parks and natural areas. Views had been selected through a survey of main Hong Kong territory hiking trails: mountain peaks, scenery points, and occasional holes in the curtain wall of trees have been the privileged observatories of a region that challenges any presumption on natural-artificial divergence. Durante […]

Carlo Scarpa’s imagination

Carlo Scarpa’s imagination / 2011 Carlo Scarpa was able to create a perfect unity between architectonic body and design set up specifications, so that one gets the impression that details self-produce buildings. I examined those details which I think better than others show a peculiarity of Carlo Scarpa’s work: the use of a constructive cracked line that continues to break itself and bend over on itself. It seems to indicate part of that dark imaginative universe, inherited also from the Byzantine-Venetian tradition, which inspired Carlo Scarpa in his designs.

3Venices

3Venices / 2010 – 2012 “3Venices” is a photographic project on Venice, or rather on the three Venices in the world. It focuses on the identity, cultural and architectural heritage of Venice: the project aims to be a photographic reasoning about Venice’s architectural elements which have made it a topos, a symbol, all over the world. Moreover, the photos bring to light the elements of modernity of the contemporary Venices: Venetian Macao and Venetian Las Vegas.

Persistence & Transition

Persistence & Transition – Water, farmland, and human settlements in the Zhujiang Delta / 2010 The Zhujiang Delta in south-eastern China is a quite recent alluvial land that only a progressive man-made reclamation has stabilized. Since the 1978 reforms, an intense industrial and urban growth have been reframing all inhabited places in the Delta. Everything is in the process of becoming something else. It is hard to coordinate the impressions of these transformations: the sense of constant transition, the rush to modernity and the timeless rhythm of farming. The photos interpret the transition portraying sequential elements in the man-made landscape. The photos recognize the dignity of the physical structures and the people living there. The resulting fragmentation is a contemporary global attitude.

Colliders

Colliders / 2008 – 2010 The 20th century vigorously expanded the concept of artwork. I am convinced that in the near future the enclosure surrounding what may be defined as a “work of art” will become still more all-embracing, to the point of welcoming creations produced by the most extreme human technical-scientific skills, albeit with no aesthetic ambition or concessions to design. Set on the horizon is my project “Colliders”, a photographic documentation of particle accelerators. “Colliders” is a photographic elegy on the refinement of machines and technology, conducted in the light of shrill colours that often recall a reproduction of the typically flat unreality of cartoon.
